Payment System Crash When Trying to Combine Multiple Checks

Question

Why is the payment crashing the system when trying to combine multiple checks?

Answer

We understand that dealing with a system crash, especially with a large party waiting, is frustrating. This error can occur when combining checks across multiple devices. Here’s how to handle it and prevent it from happening again:

  • If a check won't reopen, the quickest solution is to recreate it. We know this is an inconvenience, and we apologize.
  • To ensure a smooth process, we strongly recommend using a single device (like one terminal or tablet) for all check-combining actions. Have one server manage merging all the checks for the party on that one device from start to finish. This is the safest and most reliable method.

If using one device isn't possible, you can use multiple, but you must be very deliberate to avoid sync issues. The key is to pause between each action.

  1. On Device A, combine two checks.
  2. Stop and wait 20-30 seconds for the system to sync this change to all other devices.
  3. Briefly check on Device B to ensure you see the newly combined check correctly.
  4. Only then should you perform the next action (like adding another check or item).

This crash is caused by a sync issue. When two devices try to make changes to the same check without seeing the other's most recent update, the system can get confused and "lose" track of an order, causing the error. The best practice of using one device avoids this conflict entirely.
