Sling by Toast: Available Shifts, Shift Swaps, and Shift Offers

Make a Shift Available

If you are scheduled on a day when you cannot work, you may be able to have a coworker pick up your shift so you are no longer responsible for working it.

 

From the Web:

  1. Select the shift to open the details.
  2. Select the 3-dot option at the bottom.
  3. Select Make shift available.

Once your shift is made available, Sling sends a notification to employees assigned to the same location and position so they can apply for the shift.

 

From the Mobile App:

  1. Go to the Shifts tab.
  2. Locate the shift in the list and tap it to open the details.
  3. Select the 3-dot option at the top right.
  4. Select Make shift available.

You will receive a confirmation message showing that the shift is available for pickup.

 

Note: You remain responsible for the shift until another employee takes it and/or a manager approves the exchange.

Apply for an Available Shift

If your company allows shift exchanges, you may be able to pick up extra hours. Available shifts can be posted by management or made available by coworkers.

 

From the Web:

You can apply for available shifts from multiple areas in Sling.

 

  • The Dashboard displays active available shift notifications.
  • The Schedule tab displays assigned and available shifts.
  • The Available Shifts tab displays a list of all available shifts.

 

  1. Select an available shift to open the details.
  2. Select Apply for shift at the top right.

You will receive confirmation of your application. Depending on your company settings, manager approval may be required.

 

To review shifts you have applied for, look for shifts displaying your profile picture on the right side of the shift block.

 

From the Mobile App:

  1. Go to the Shifts tab.
  2. Select the Available tab at the top right.
  3. Select the shift you want to apply for.
  4. Select the 3-dot option in the top right corner.
  5. Select Apply for shift.

You will receive confirmation that your application was submitted. If automatic approval is enabled, the shift is assigned immediately.

Receive Notifications for Available Shifts

When an available shift is posted for your assigned position and location, you automatically receive a notification in your Dashboard.

 

If you are not receiving notifications for available shifts, contact your admin or manager to confirm that all applicable positions and locations are assigned to your profile.

 

To ensure you receive alerts, verify that Dashboard notifications are enabled through email or push notifications.

Cancel a Shift Application

If you applied for an available shift that you can no longer work, you can cancel your application as long as a manager has not approved it.

 

From the Web:

  1. Select the available shift you applied for.
  2. Select the option to retract your application.

If the shift has already been approved and assigned to you, you may have the option to make the shift available again. If the option to make the shift available is not displayed, contact your manager directly to let them know you cannot work the shift.

 

From the Mobile App:

  1. Go to the Shifts tab.
  2. Select the Available tab.
  3. Select the shift for which you want to retract your application.
  4. Select the 3-dot option in the upper right corner.
  5. Select Retract application.

Swap a Shift

If you cannot work a shift but do not want to lose hours, you can request to swap shifts with a coworker. Note: Shift swaps are limited to shifts within two weeks of the date you are offering. Manager approval may still be required.

 

From the Web:

  1. Select the shift you want to give up to open the details.
  2. Select the 3-dot option.
  3. Select Swap shift.
  4. Select the employee you want to exchange shifts with.
  5. Select the shift you want to pick up in exchange.
  6. Select Initiate swap.

The selected employee receives a notification to review the swap request.

 

The employee can accept or reject the swap request.

 

  • If accepted, the request may be sent to a manager for approval.
  • If rejected, both schedules remain unchanged.

Once the swap is approved and completed, both employees receive notifications and the shifts are reassigned.

 

From the Mobile App:

  1. Go to the Shifts tab.
  2. Select the shift you want to swap.
  3. Select the 3-dot option in the top right corner.
  4. Select Swap shift.
  5. Select the employee you want to swap with.
  6. Select one of their eligible shifts.
  7. Select Send.

You will receive confirmation that the swap request has been sent.

 

Note: You remain responsible for the shift until the other employee accepts the swap and any required approvals are completed.

Offer a Shift to a Coworker

If you already arranged for another employee to take your shift, you can offer the shift directly to them in Sling.

 

From the Web

  1. Select the shift you want to offer.
  2. Select the 3-dot option.
  3. Select Offer shift.
  4. Select the employee who will receive the offer.
  5. Select Offer.

The employee receives a notification to accept or reject the shift.

 

From the Mobile App:

  1. Go to the Shifts tab.
  2. Select the shift you want to offer.
  3. Select the 3-dot option in the top right corner.
  4. Select Offer shift.
  5. Select an employee from the list or search for their name.

You will receive confirmation that the employee was notified of the offer.

 

The employee can accept or reject the shift. Manager approval may also be required before the exchange is finalized.

 

Note: You remain responsible for the shift until the exchange is approved.
