Dual Pricing Basics and Compliance

What is Toast Dual Pricing?

Toast Dual Pricing enables restaurants to present two order totals to their guests before they make payment: a card total and a discounted cash total. By building card processing costs into listed menu prices, a restaurant can help cover these fees on card payments while also rewarding cash-paying guests with a lower price. When a guest pays by card, they pay the standard listed (card) price. If they pay by cash, an automatic 4% discount by default applies at checkout—giving them a lower cash total.

When used and disclosed properly, it's a compliant way to offset processing fees across both credit and debit cards without adding a separate fee to the check.

Why do I need to raise my menu prices in Toast Web?

To help ensure you are getting the most value from the Dual Pricing product, Toast recommends that you raise your menu prices to incorporate your card processing fees—only if you have not done so already. Building the cost of card processing into your listed menu prices allows you to help cover these costs when your guests pay by card. If a guest instead chooses to pay by cash, the discounted price is automatically applied, since there are no card processing fees to offset when cash is accepted.

Without raising menu prices, the discount would come straight out of your margin, defeating the purpose of offsetting card fees.

Note: On your merchant card processing statement, Toast may include an estimate of incremental revenue you have generated using the Dual Pricing product during the applicable period based on the assumption that you increased your menu prices in accordance with this recommendation. If your location is subject to a Monthly Minimum Processing Fee, the processing statement will also indicate the dollar amount assessed if you failed to meet the minimum that month.

How much should I raise my menu prices by?

Toast recommends that merchants raise their listed menu prices by 4%, which reflects the average cost of card processing for customers using the Dual Pricing product.

What do I need to do to stay compliant?

To remain compliant with card brand rules, customers using Toast Dual Pricing must ensure that all listed prices represent the standard card price, not the discounted cash price.

Note: You can display both card and cash prices side-by-side for each item, but card prices must always be displayed.

Toast also recommends that you display clear disclosures at the entrance, on menus, and at the point of sale (e.g., “Pay with cash and save 4%”).

Note: The Dual Pricing product helps you comply with card brand requirements. You remain responsible for compliance with any additional disclosure or other legal requirements that may apply in your state or local jurisdiction.

How the Cash Discount Works

What happens if a guest pays partially with cash and partially with card?

The discount only applies if the entire check is paid in full with cash. If a portion of the check is paid by card and a portion is paid by cash, the discount will not be applied to either portion. However, if you split a check into multiple checks, the discount will be applied to the split check if it is paid in full with cash.

Does Dual Pricing affect taxes or tips?

The automated cash discount applies to the subtotal before tax and tip—the same way other discounts work in Toast Web (configured as a fixed-percentage discount that applies to the entire check). Since taxes and tips are typically calculated as a percentage of the subtotal, the amount of tax and tips collected on cash transactions may be slightly less than on card transactions.

How does this impact Toast Online Ordering and/or Toast Local?

Guests that place pick-up orders through these channels will receive the automated discount if they pay in-store with cash. If they pay with their card at the time of ordering, then they will not receive a discount.

Reporting, Statements, and Fees

How will this impact my reporting or settlements?

All existing reports remain the same. The “Cash Discount” appears as a standard discount across sales reports (Sales Summary, Orders, Discounts Report, etc.). Your merchant card processing statements will not change, though future releases may include enhanced reporting.

Will I still pay card processing fees on my monthly statement?

Using Toast's Dual Pricing product does not mean that you will no longer pay card processing fees. You are still responsible for paying your full, contractual processing rate on all card transactions you accept, including both credit and debit cards. By raising your listed/advertised prices by 4%, you will offset most or all of your card processing fees. If your location is subject to a Monthly Minimum Processing Fee, you will be charged an adjustment on your processing statement only if your card processing fees failed to meet the minimum that month. Refer to the next FAQ for more detail.

What is the Monthly Minimum Processing Fee?

Your Dual Pricing package may include significant discounts on monthly software subscription fees. To support this discounted package, your location may be subject to a Monthly Minimum Processing Fee.

Each calendar month, Toast compares the card processing fees assessed for your location against your Monthly Minimum Processing Fee amount:

    • If your card processing fees meet or exceed the minimum, there is no additional charge.
    • If your card processing fees are less than the minimum, you will be charged only the difference.

For example, if your Monthly Minimum Processing Fee amount is $1,600 and your card processing fees for the month total $1,300, you will be charged the $300 difference.

To calculate the card volume you'll need to process in a month to exceed the minimum, take the Monthly Minimum Processing Fee amount and divide it by your card processing rate.

The Monthly Minimum Processing Fee is waived for the calendar month in which your location goes live with Toast and the following two calendar months. After the waiver period, any amount needed to meet the minimum will appear under “Other Account Activity” on your processing statement as “Amount needed to meet Monthly Minimum Processing Fee.”

Dual Pricing vs. Other Cost-Offsetting Options

Is Dual Pricing the same as Cash Discounting?

Essentially, yes, Dual Pricing is functionally the same as Cash Discounting. In both cases, merchants must ensure that their listed menu prices represent the price for card payments, and if a guest pays by cash, they are provided a discount from that listed price.

How does Dual Pricing differ from Credit Card Surcharging?

    • Dual Pricing: Merchant raises listed menu prices to include card processing fees, then offers a discount for cash payments. The listed price applies to both credit and debit card transactions, helping merchants offset these costs. For guests, it is framed as a choice: pay by card because it's convenient, or pay by cash to receive a discount. Legal in all 50 states so long as a merchant's listed prices represent the higher price for cards and the discount is properly disclosed for all guests.
    • Surcharging: Merchant adds a fee on top of the guest's total for credit card payments. This applies to credit cards only—cannot apply to debit or gift cards. For guests, it is seen as a fee added to the bill. Banned or highly restricted in several states (CT, MA, ME, OK, NY).

In short: Surcharging adds a fee; Dual Pricing provides a discount.

Can a merchant use both Credit Card Surcharging and Dual Pricing at the same time?

No. Per card brand rules, a merchant cannot use both Credit Card Surcharging and Dual Pricing (sometimes referred to as Cash Discounting) at the same time.

How do I know which cost-offsetting model is right for me?

It depends on your goals, your guests, and your overall pricing strategy. Dual Pricing is the best fit if you want to offset processing costs for both debit and credit card transactions, but only if you are willing to incorporate the cost of card processing into your posted menu prices. Surcharging may be a better fit for your business if you do not want to incorporate the cost of card processing into your posted menu prices and would rather add a fee to each credit card transaction (not debit cards).

How can I talk to guests about it?

Keep it simple and positive: “We now offer a 4% discount when you pay with cash—it helps us keep our prices fair while covering card processing costs.”
