About Sorting and Filtering in Toast eCommerce

Sorting and filtering help guests find products in your Toast eCommerce store faster. Instead of scrolling through every category, guests can sort products by name or price and narrow results by price, availability, and product options.

Sorting and filtering are especially useful for stores with large catalogs, such as wine shops, merchandise retailers, and packaged goods brands. There is nothing for you to set up. The filters are built automatically from the product data you already have.

Who Can Use Sorting and Filtering

  • Sorting and filtering are available on Toast eCommerce stores in the US
  • Guests use sorting and filtering when they shop your store online
  • You do not need any extra modules, settings, or permissions for guests to see sort and filter controls

Sort Options Guests Can Use

Guests can reorder the products in your store with these sort options:

  • Alphabetically, A–Z or Z–A, by product name
  • Price, low to high or high to low

On a desktop computer, the sort options appear in a drop-down at the top of the product list. On a mobile device, the sort options open in a panel at the bottom of the screen.

Filters Guests Can Use

Guests can narrow the products they see with these filters:

  • Price — a range slider with minimum and maximum price fields. The range is set automatically from the prices in your catalog.
  • Availability — an In stock only switch that hides items marked out of stock.
  • Options — product options you have set up, such as size or color. Only options that exist in your catalog appear.
  • Attributes — the item tags on your products, listed alphabetically.

Results update as soon as a guest applies a filter.

How Guests Apply and Clear Filters

Each filter a guest applies appears as a chip above the product list. Guests can remove a single filter from its chip or select Clear all to remove every filter at once. A result count shows how many products match the current filters.

On a mobile device, filters open in a full-screen panel with collapsible sections. Guests confirm their choices with a button that shows how many results match.

How Your Product Data Shapes the Filters

The filters guests see come directly from your menu and item data, so keeping that data accurate keeps your filters useful.

  • Prices set the price filter's range.
  • Out of stock status controls which items the In stock only filter hides. To learn how to mark items out of stock, see 86 an Item on the POS or Toast Web.
  • Product options, such as size and color, populate the Options filter.
  • Item tags populate the Attributes filter.
  • Menu visibility controls which items appear in your store at all. Items hidden from Toast eCommerce never appear in results. To learn more, see Manage Your Menu Visibility Settings.

Note: If your store is already set to hide out-of-stock items, guests do not see the In stock only switch, because out-of-stock items are already hidden.

Known Limitations

  • You cannot choose which filters appear in your store. Filters appear automatically based on your product data.
  • Item tags appear as a single alphabetical list under Attributes. They are not grouped by type, so a store with many tags shows guests a long list.
  • Filters for brand, country of origin, and custom attributes are not currently available.
  • A best-selling sort is not currently available.

If sorting or filtering does not appear in your store, or results look wrong, contact Toast Customer Care.
