How to set one printer for both tickets and receipts.

In this Article:

Before you begin

Applies to: Toast POS, Toast Web

Permissions needed:

  • 7.1 Terminal Setup and 7.2 Advanced Terminal Setup
  • 6.2 Kitchen/Dining Room Setup and 6.10 Printer and Cash Drawer Setup

What you'll accomplish: One printer will print your guest receipts and your kitchen tickets, instead of using a separate printer for each.

Set the receipt printer for a terminal

Guest receipts print on the printer that is selected as the terminal's receipt printer. To send receipts to the printer you want, set it as the designated receipt printer on that POS device.

  1. On the Toast POS device, from the main menu, navigate to Setup > Device Setup.
  2. Select the Receipt printer setting.
  3. Choose the printer you want, and then select Save.

Expected outcome: Guest receipts for that terminal now print on the printer you selected.

Print prep station (kitchen) tickets on the same printer

Kitchen tickets print on the printer assigned to the prep station. To print a prep station's kitchen tickets on the same printer you use for receipts, assign that printer to the prep station.

  1. On the Toast POS device, from the main menu, navigate to Setup > Printer Setup.
  2. Select the printer you want from the list.
  3. Select Prep Stations.
  4. Choose every prep station whose kitchen tickets you want this printer to print.
  5. Select Save Changes.

Expected outcome: Kitchen tickets for the prep stations you selected now print on the same printer. You can assign the same printer to more than one prep station, but you cannot assign more than one printer to a single prep station.

Note: For more details on creating prep stations, choosing whether items are also sent to the expediter, and routing menu items, see Configure and Assign Prep Stations.

Print expediter tickets on the same printer

The expediter (also called the expo) prints one consolidated ticket for the full order. To print expediter tickets on the same printer, set that printer as the expediter printer in Toast Web.

  1. In Toast Web, navigate to Kitchen > Printers, tickets, & KDS devices > Kitchen and ticket setup.
  2. Scroll down to the Printing Mode setting in the Expediter section and find Expediter Printer(s).
  3. Choose the printer you want.
  4. Select Save and then Publish your changes.

Expected outcome: Expediter tickets now print on the printer you selected the next time an order is sent to the kitchen.

Avoid double printing

When the same printer is assigned to both a prep station and the expediter, it prints two tickets for the same order — one prep station ticket and one expediter ticket. This happens regardless of your other expediter settings.

If you want one printer to handle receipts and kitchen tickets without printing the same order twice, assign that printer to either the prep station or the expediter, not both.

Note: If tickets are still printing more than once after you change these settings, see Troubleshoot Double Printing for the full set of causes and fixes.

Frequently asked questions

How do I set a printer as the expediter printer?

To set a printer as the expediter printer, navigate to Kitchen > Printers, tickets, & KDS devices > Kitchen and ticket setup in Toast Web, scroll to the Printing Mode setting in the Expediter section, choose your printer under Expediter Printer(s), and then select Save and Publish.

Why is one order printing twice on the same printer?

An order prints twice on the same printer when that printer is assigned to both a prep station and the expediter, so it prints a prep station ticket and an expediter ticket for the same order. Assign the printer to only one of the two, or see Troubleshoot Double Printing for more causes.
