Learn how to use the update history feature.
The View Update History feature shows the audit log for a check, including who changed an order, when, and on which device. Learn what it shows and its limits.
View Update History is the check audit log on the Order Details page in Toast Web. It shows information about a specific check that is not available in the Order Details report, such as the transaction type, the date and time of the transaction, and the name of the person who processed the transaction.
Restaurants often use this feature as an audit trail to confirm who made a change to a check. Common questions it answers include who reopened a closed check, who added or voided an item, and whether a check was transferred from one server to another.
The update history lists each action taken on a check, in order, so you can audit how the check changed over time. For a single check, you can typically see:
Note: The update history is the official record for confirming who changed a check and when. If a payment was taken, it appears in the history; if an action is not listed, there is no record that it occurred.
View Update History is available in Toast Web on the Order Details page for a check. Access depends on your Toast Web permissions for finding checks and viewing payment details. The Toast Web permissions needed is Restaurant Admin > 4.24 Check Audit.
If you do not see the View Update History link, contact Toast Customer Care to confirm your access.
Expected outcome: The Audit page opens and displays the update history for the check you selected.
The Audit page displays the check's history in columns. Each column answers a specific question about the change.
| Column | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Order # | The order number for the check |
| Update Time | The timestamp of when the order was last updated |
| User | The name of the user who processed the order |
| Device ID | The ID number of the device used for the transaction |
| Operation | The type of action that was performed |
| Type | The type of transaction |
| Name | The order number |
| Changes | Additional order information; select Show to view more detail |
The update history does not capture every scenario. Keep the following in mind so you know when the feature can answer your question and when it cannot.
For checks older than two weeks, or for records that do not appear in the update history, contact Toast Customer Care.
To see who changed or reopened a check, open the check's update history. In Toast Web, navigate to Finance > Payments > Find checks & issue refund, select the check, and select View Update History in the Order Details window. The Audit page lists each action with the user's name, the timestamp, and the device used.

Yes, you can see if a check was transferred from one server to another in the update history. Open the check's update history from the Order Details window and look for a transfer action in the list, which records the user who made the change and the time it happened. The update history is the official way to confirm who transferred a check and when.

The update history is blank for an older check because updates are stored for two weeks only and are permanently deleted after that. Checks older than two weeks will appear blank. For records that are no longer available, contact Toast Customer Care.

You can view a check's update history for two weeks. Updates are permanently deleted after two weeks, so the history is only available for recent checks. To find the check itself further back, see Find Checks.
