DIGI Fields on Every Scale Item

Every item you sell through your DIGI scale needs four values in Toast. If any of them is missing or incorrect, the item does not appear on the scale, or a change you make does not reach it.

  • PLU — the price lookup (PLU) number for the item. It must be unique and above zero.
  • deli_mode — LB, OZ, KG, or PCS. This must agree with the item's unit of measure. Use PCS for items sold by the piece, such as pre-made or individually sold items.
  • deptno — the number that matches the item's category group.
  • group — the number that matches the item's category.

Three more values are optional and can be added at any time:

  • ingredients — free text, printed on the label. Leave it empty if there are none.
  • sell_by_type — days or hours.
  • sell_by_time — a number that matches sell_by_type, for example two days or two hours.

Note: Your Onboarding Consultant gives you the deptno and group numbers that match your category groups and categories. Keep that mapping somewhere you can refer back to it.

Add a New Item for Your DIGI Scale

  1. Navigate to Toast Web > Retail dashboard > Item library.
  2. Select Add item.
  3. Enter the item's name, and select its category group and category.
  4. Set the selling strategy to Embedded barcode.
  5. Enter a price lookup (PLU) number and a barcode for the item. Both must be unique. The barcode must be five digits, including any leading zeros — for example, PLU 22 pairs with barcode 00022.
  6. Select the barcode scanner configuration, also called the embedded amount type, that matches how your labels print: price, weight, or price composed.
  7. Select the item's unit of measure, such as pounds.
  8. Set the pricing strategy to Base price and enter the price per unit, such as the price per pound.
  9. Enter the item's deli_mode, deptno, and group values in the custom attributes.
  10. Enter the optional ingredients, sell_by_type, and sell_by_time values if your labels use them.
  11. Save and publish your changes.

Expected outcome: the item reaches your DIGI scale at its next refresh, and scanning its label at a Toast terminal adds the item and the correct price to the check.

Note:

  • Your DIGI scale refreshes its item information from Toast automatically, typically every 20 to 30 minutes. A new item does not appear on the scale immediately.
  • The price lookup (PLU) number and the barcode do not have to match, but keeping them consistent makes them easier to manage. A common approach is to group numbers by category, so that all chicken items sit in the 20s, for example.

Edit an Existing DIGI Scale Item

  1. Navigate to Toast Web > Retail dashboard > Item library.
  2. Select the item you want to change.
  3. Update the item details you need to change, such as the name or the price.
  4. Confirm the item still has values for PLU, deli_mode, deptno, and group, and that deli_mode still agrees with the unit of measure.
  5. Save and publish your changes.

Expected outcome: your change reaches your DIGI scale at its next refresh, typically within 20 to 30 minutes.

Do not change an item's selling strategy or embedded amount type once your DIGI scale is live. Changing either one can stop your existing items from scanning. Contact Toast Customer Care if you need to change them.

Add a New Category Group or Category

New category groups and categories need new DIGI numbers before items in them appear on the scale. DIGI creates the new department or group on their side.

  1. Create the new category group or category in your item library.
  2. Choose the deptno or group number you want to use for it, following the numbering your Onboarding Consultant gave you.
  3. Email the new number and the name it maps to, to the DIGI team at DAISupportTechnology@us.digi-group.com.
  4. Enter the new deptno or group value on each item in that category group or category.
  5. Save and publish your changes.

Expected outcome: once DIGI adds the new department or group, items in the new category group or category appear on your scale.
