Answers to common questions about Toast Fuel (Fuel Mode), including eligibility, supported hardware, payments, and installation.
Toast Fuel, also called Fuel Mode, is a mode built on Toast's Retail platform that connects your indoor point of sale (POS) to your outdoor fuel dispensers. It lets your staff authorize pumps, handle prepays, accept fleet cards, and manage fuel transactions from the same system you use for your in-store retail and food operations.
Your site may be eligible for Toast Fuel if you operate independently of a major oil brand and use Wayne fuel dispensers with iXPay 1 or iXPay 2 payment terminals. Sites with a convenience store or foodservice component are an especially strong fit. Talk to your Toast representative to confirm eligibility.
Toast Fuel currently supports Wayne dispensers with iXPay 1 or iXPay 2 payment terminals. Support for additional dispenser brands is planned for a future release.
Customers can pay at the pump using contact or contactless card payment, including EMV-certified chip cards. Toast Fuel also accepts fleet cards from Visa, Mastercard, WEX, and Voyager.
Yes, Toast Fuel supports fleet cards from Visa, Mastercard, WEX, and Voyager today. Additional fleet card programs are planned for a future release.
Toast Fuel does not support PIN debit at the pump today, so debit cards run as credit. PIN debit support is planned for a future release.
Yes, Toast Fuel supports cash and credit price differentiation at the pump, letting you display different prices depending on how the customer pays.
Toast's installation partner, OWL Services, installs the Fuel Mode hardware, including a site survey and the Allied Forecourt Controller that connects your POS to your dispensers. Your Toast representative will coordinate timing and let you know what to expect.
Toast loyalty and marketing tools continue to work for your in-store and foodservice purchases, but they don't apply to fuel transactions today. Fuel-specific loyalty and discounting is planned for a future release.
If a customer drives off without paying, your staff can log the transaction as a drive-off in Toast to keep your records accurate.
Note: this is only applicable in post-pay fuel flows where a customer lifts the nozzle to fuel before paying. This action calls into the POS for a cashier to authorize the pump to allow fueling before payment is taken. This post-pay fuel workflow is NOT available yet.
Pricing for Toast Fuel depends on your existing Toast subscription and the specifics of your site. Contact your Toast representative for a quote.
