When you run out of an item, you can update your inventory by 86ing the item to mark it as out of stock. For more inventory management, check out xtraCHEF! Learn more: xtraCHEF 101.
If a menu item or modifier goes out of stock in the middle of a rush, a manager doesn't want to have to go find a computer, log into Toast Web, and make updates to the menu. Instead, you can use Quick Edit mode to 86 something directly on a Toast device. When you follow these steps to 86 an item, it won't be able to be selected on the POS or on your Toast Online Ordering site.
Note: An item will remain out of stock, or 86'd, until you mark the item as back in stock using the same workflow below.
When you look at the item you've 86'd, you'll see that it is grayed out and can't be selected, with a zero in the corner. In the example below, Torta Cubana and Torta Adobada are marked as out of stock.
If you'd like to 86 an item from Toast Web instead of directly from the POS device, you can do so by following the steps below.
Note: Multi-location management (MLM) users will also follow this process. Using advanced properties to 86 an item will only change the quantity of the item at the location being viewed.
To add the item back into inventory, simply delete the "0" in the Inventory column.
Note: If you've enabled future order scheduling for online orders (ordering in advance) and serve limited quantity items on your menu, Toast is unable to reserve those items for future orders. Therefore, if a guest adds a limited quantity of item to their cart but another guest orders the last of that item for an ASAP order, Toast is not able to prevent the sale of the item to ensure all future orders can be fulfilled.
Catering currently does not support 86ing. Because catering orders are placed for future dates (sometimes weeks or months ahead), marking an item as out of stock today would prevent guests from ordering it in the future — even when the item is available again.
If you need to prevent catering guests from ordering a particular item, use Item Limits instead:
Go to Catering & Events > Online Ordering > Catering Capacity > Item Limits.
Set the limit for the item to 0.
This will act like a “future 86” and stop guests from adding the item to their catering orders.
