Understand the Shift Review screen

The Shift Review screen displays your shift review report and the workflow steps required to close your shift. On this screen you will find:

  • Employee name and shift time: The start and end times for the current or selected shift.
  • Shift review report: A summary of your sales and activity, based on your restaurant's configuration in Toast Web.
  • Shift review steps: The specific actions you complete to close your shift, such as closing checks, declaring cash tips, and reconciling cash. For the full step-by-step closeout workflow, see Shift Review Overview.
  • Overflow menu (⋮): Additional tools to manage your data.

The overflow menu (⋮) provides these tools:

  • Refresh: Manually resyncs order data so your sales report is up to date.
  • Full sales report: Opens a detailed breakdown of your sales.
  • Print shift review: Prints your report. This option is available only after the shift is closed.
  • Other shifts: Opens a past shift from the current business week so you can view or edit it.

Note: If you see a "Failed to load shift review" error, select the Refresh option in the overflow menu (⋮) to reload your data. For more troubleshooting, see Get Help With Cash Drawer and Shift Review.

You can view or make changes to a past shift from the current business week using the Other shifts option.

  1. From the Shift Review screen, select the overflow menu (⋮) and choose Other shifts.
  2. In the Choose shift dialog, select the shift you want to view and select Okay.

While viewing a previous shift, you can view closed checks, edit cash collected and non-cash tips, print the shift review report, or perform a clock-out.

Note: Editing cash collected or non-cash tips reopens the shift for editing. Reopening a shift removes the previous tip out and cash collected entries, so you will need to turn in cash and collect tips again after making changes. For the full reopen workflow, see Shift Review Overview.

If the shift is from a prior business week, it can no longer be accessed from the POS. See Close an Open Shift From Yesterday, or contact Toast Customer Care to access shifts beyond the current week.

Frequently asked questions

Why are tips missing from a shift?

Tips are often missing because the shift review was not completed. Tips collected during a shift only appear in reporting and payroll after the shift is closed by completing the shift review. To resolve missing tips, close any open shifts by completing the shift review process. If tips are still missing after the shift is closed, see Why are tips missing from my employee's shift review?

Can I close a shift for an employee who already left?

Yes, a manager can close a shift for an employee who already left. On the POS, select Manager Activities, then Review Employee Shifts, select the employee and the specific shift, and complete the shift review. This requires the 3.12 Shift Review permission.

How do I adjust cash tips after the shift review is closed?

To adjust cash tips after the shift review is closed, you correct the time entry and re-complete the shift review. For the full steps, see Edit Cash Declared Tips On Closed Shifts.

Why can't I access a shift from last week?

You can't access a shift from last week because shift reviews on the POS are limited to the current business week. For a shift from a prior business week, see Close an Open Shift From Yesterday, or contact Toast Customer Care to temporarily adjust your business start-of-week.
