Bag Fee Setup Options

If your state requires a flat or fixed tax on each bag used or any other item sold, or you'd like to add your own bag fee, there are a few approaches you can take to configure this in Toast Web.

  • If you want to show all bag fees as a tax in your sales reports, you can create a separate "Bag Tax" tax rate. Then, you'll create a "Bag" menu item that costs $0 and has the Bag Tax added to it.
  • If you don't need to report on a bag tax, you can go straight to creating a "Bag " item

Create a Bag Tax

To create a new tax for your bag fee, follow these steps:

  1. In Toast Web, navigate to Menus > Settings > Manage tax rates.
  2. Select + Add Tax Rate to create the rate needed for the bag or taxed item.
  3. Enter a Name for the tax.
  4. Choose Fixed as the Type and enter the amount per bag in the Rate field. For example, if you were creating a bag tax rate for a restaurant based in Boston, the cost would be five cents per bag.
  5. Save and publish your changes.

Create the Bag Item

You can create a "Bag" item on your menu or in your Toast Retail item library by following these steps:

  1. In Toast Web, navigate to Menus > Bulk management > Advanced properties.
  2. Use the arrows to expand your menus and find the menu group you'd like to add a Bag item to. Consider choosing an easy-to-find menu (aka "category group" for Toast Retail). You can create a group for the bag itself, or you can add it to another existing group.
  3. Select the + Add button.
  4. Fill out the Name fields for the item.
    1. If you're using a tax rate to keep track of your bag fee, then set the item price to $0 and select your newly created Bag Tax in the Taxes section.
    2. If you're not using a tax rate for your bag fee, enter the cost of the fee as the item's base price.
  5. Save and publish your changes.
