If the KDS shows a Loading Tickets screen

Loading Tickets means the device is connected but has not finished pulling order data.

  1. Confirm the KDS is powered on and connected to the network you expect, either Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
  2. Open the three-dot overflow menu on the KDS.
  3. Navigate to the setup menu and select the resync or refresh option.
  4. Wait for the sync to finish. Do not restart the device while a sync is running.
  5. Confirm the Loading Tickets screen clears.

Expected outcome: Tickets load and the KDS returns to its normal ticket view.

If the screen does not clear, continue to the next section.

If the KDS shows a sync failure or "Something went wrong" message

  1. Note the exact wording of the message. The wording tells Customer Care which system is failing if you need to contact them later.
  2. Confirm other Toast devices on the same network are working normally. If they are not, the problem is your network rather than this device.
  3. Run a resync from the KDS setup menu and wait for it to finish.
  4. If the message returns, clear the Toast app cache on the KDS device, force stop the Toast app, and reopen it.
  5. Wait for the KDS to reconnect and reload tickets.

Expected outcome: The error message clears and tickets reload.

If the message still returns, restart the KDS device. If the KDS pairs with a specific Toast POS device, restart that device as well. Wait for the KDS to reconnect fully before testing again.

If the KDS keeps prompting you to resync

Repeated resync prompts almost always point to an unstable connection rather than a fault on the device.

  1. Confirm whether the KDS is on Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
  2. If the device is on Wi-Fi, move it to a wired Ethernet connection if one is available. A wired connection is more reliable in a kitchen environment.
  3. If a wired connection is not available, check the distance and obstructions between the KDS and your wireless access point.
  4. Confirm the device is joined to your restaurant network and not to a guest network.
  5. Run a resync and watch whether the prompt returns.

Note: Intermittent Wi-Fi or Ethernet connectivity causes recurring sync prompts, Loading Tickets loops, and delayed KDS updates. Fixing the connection resolves all three.

If more than one KDS device is affected

When several devices fail at the same time, the cause is usually shared rather than local.

  1. Write down which KDS devices are affected and which are working normally.
  2. Confirm whether the affected devices share a network switch, access point, or Ethernet run.
  3. Confirm your router and network hardware are powered on and online.
  4. Restore the shared connection, then resync each affected KDS.

If every KDS is affected and your network hardware appears healthy, contact Toast Customer Care.

Confirm the Fix

Send a new test order and confirm all of the following:

  • The order appears on the expected KDS
  • The KDS updates without delay or errors
  • Staff can fulfill or bump the order normally
  • No resync prompt, Loading Tickets screen, or error message returns

If any of these still fail, contact Toast Customer Care.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Loading Tickets message mean?

The Loading Tickets message means your KDS is connected but has not finished loading order data. It usually clears on its own within a few seconds. If it stays on screen, the device has lost its connection to your network or its sync state needs to be refreshed.

Also asked as: "My KDS is stuck loading," "The KDS says loading tickets forever"

Will I lose orders while the KDS is syncing?

You will not lose orders while the KDS is syncing. Orders continue to be recorded in Toast POS and appear on the KDS once the sync completes. Your kitchen can work from printed tickets or the POS until the KDS catches up.

Why does only one of my KDS screens have this problem?

A single affected screen usually means a device-level problem such as a loose Ethernet cable, a weak Wi-Fi signal at that spot in the kitchen, or a stale app cache on that device. Start with the connection at that device before changing any settings.

Do I need to republish my menu after a resync?

You do not need to republish your menu after a resync. A resync pulls the current published configuration down to the device. If you made configuration changes in Toast Web and have not published them, publish first, then resync.
