Get Started With Toast Pay

Toast Pay ​​is an updated mobile payment product that provides a fast and easy checkout experience by allowing guests to pay with their phones

Toast Pay is included in the Toast core POS subscription and can be turned on and set up right from your Toast account.

As of December 2023, all new Toast customers will have access to Toast Pay by default. For restaurants not using Toast Pay yet, you can update to Toast Pay for free here or select the image below:

To get to Toast Pay, navigate to Toast Web, Payments > Payment Methods > Toast Pay


On this page, restaurants can:

 

  • Turn on Toast Pay: Toggle the QR code payment on the receipt to On. This will print a QR code on your receipt with the message "View check and pay now", enabling your guests to do so.

  • Split Payments: Allow guests to split checks evenly.

  • Menu Item Reviews Setup: Set up recipients to get weekly menu item review emails under View settings.

  • Server POS Notification Setup: Determine what kind of Toast Pay POS notifications are enabled and who sees those notifications.

  • Tip Selections: Select what tip options and default tips guests see when paying with Toast Pay. Note that these tip selections are shared on the Toast guest-facing display.

  • Logo Review: Select your restaurant’s logo that will show up at the top of the guest's Toast Pay experience.

Toast Pay Features

The following features are not yet available for Canada, Ireland, and the UK locations. Please check back for updates:
  • Loyalty
  • Guestbook 
  • Email marketing 
  • Toast Cash

 

  • Accepted payment methods: Guests can pay with all major credit cards, Apple Pay, and Google Pay. Guests can also use Toast-specific rewards, including loyalty points, promo codes, and Toast cash.
  • Menu item reviews: Keep tabs on your menu item quality with real-time feedback from Toast Pay guests packaged into Toast Web reporting. See Optimize Toast Pay with Menu Item Reviews for more information.
  • Split checks: Guests can evenly split a check across other guests Toast Pay, all from the same QR code
  • Inviting guests to pay: After the first guest splits the check, other guests can scan the same QR code or receive a link from the first guest
  • POS notifications: Servers will receive a POS notification when a guest initiates a split and pays the first part, and a second notification once the full order is paid and closed. Notifications can be set up by following the directions listed in Get Started with Mobile Payments and Digital Menus in Support Center.

Note: After a check has been split and partially paid via Toast Pay, other guests can still close out their portion of the check on the POS via the usual payment workflow.
 
  • Powering loyalty & guest marketing: Guests can participate in your loyalty program via Toast Pay, while you can collect data to power your marketing and guestbook
  • Loyalty integration: Toast Pay guests can sign up for loyalty programs via email, accrue points, and redeem them during checkout. Staff members can also help guests by taking the gift card and/or loyalty information and manually entering it at a POS terminal or Toast Go®.
  • Guest data collection: Guests who complete a loyalty transaction will be added to your guestbook to power your email marketing program.

Staff Training

Training overview: 

  • Free up your staff to spend more time on order taking, running, and hospitality and less time swiping credit cards and closing out checks. However, before using this feature with guests, familiarize your staff with the mobile payments and digital menus process and create a script for them to use when introducing this payment option. 
  • However you communicate this change with your guests, your staff must be prepared to guide them. Ensure the tone is friendly and reassuring and a plan is in place if a manager needs to get involved. If they are unfamiliar with QR code technology, direct your staff to the following resources for more information:
  • Sample staff script:
    • If the check is delivered to the table after their meal is complete: "Thank you so much for dining with us today! I've taken the liberty of printing your check here. [Places on the table]. There is a QR code on the receipt that, when scanned using your phone's camera, will direct you to complete your payment right here at the table, including payment options like Apple Pay and Google Pay. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to let me know!"
    • If the check is delivered to the table before their meal is complete: "When you're finished with your meal, use the camera on your phone to scan the QR code on your receipt [show QR code to the guest] to pay for your meal. This will bring you to a website where you can complete your payment right here at the table, including payment options like Apple Pay and Google Pay. And, of course, if there is anything else I can help you with, please let me know!"

Toast Pay Frequently Asked Questions 

Does Toast Pay cost anything to the restaurant?

Toast Pay works like mobile payments today and is included with the POS. Transactions are charged at the Card Not Present rate, but no monthly fee exists.
 

What are the new features of Toast Pay vs. mobile payments?

Menu item reviews (including Toast Web reporting), even check to split by guests, and a new branded experience with the restaurant logo. If you haven’t yet updated Toast Pay, you can update to Toast Pay for free on this page.
 

What can I configure with Toast Pay?

Menu item reviews, POS notifications, tip settings, and the restaurant logo at the top of the guest experience can all be configured. See more details in the Toast Pay Setup section.
 

Is Toast Pay available on iOS and Android?

Yes, Toast Pay is available on iOS and Android. Note: Don't Wait to Pay and Toast Cash are only available on iOS.

 

How does the server know someone paid with Toast Pay?

Servers can receive POS notifications when guests have successfully paid via Toast Pay or failed to pay and may need help. See more details in the POS Notifications section of this article. In addition, on the Table Service screen, the guest's table changes from yellow to white once the guest's payment has been completed through Toast Pay. 
 

What payment methods are accepted with Toast Pay?

Guests can pay with all major credit cards, Apple Pay, and Google Pay. Guests can also use Toast-specific rewards, including loyalty points, promo codes, and Toast cash.
