Device Configuration for Auto-Firing

To receive online orders you will need to enable order auto-firing on only one device at your restaurant location. Order auto-firing is a configuration within Toast POS that manages scheduled and online orders to automatically fire to the kitchen when ready. Order auto-firing must be enabled for your restaurant to receive online orders.

If auto-firing is set up on multiple devices, you'll experience orders double-printing. Check out our Troubleshoot Double Printing article.

If you're experiencing issues with your auto-fire device, check out Troubleshoot Your Autofire Device.

  1. From the main menu of the Toast app on your device, select Setup > Device Setup.
  2. Locate and select the Order Auto Firing option.
  3. Select Assign then select Save.

Enable Order Auto-Firing in Toast Web

  1. In Toast Web, navigate to Takeout & delivery > Availability > Online Ordering.
  2. Scroll down to the Approval section, and find the Approval Mode setting. If Send orders directly to kitchen or Use rules is selected as your approval method for online orders, you'll then see the option to select an auto-firing device.
    • Send orders directly to kitchen pushes all incoming orders directly to the kitchen when they are ready to be prepared.
    • Note that when Use rules is selected, order approval through Pending Orders mode is required or orders will automatically be rejected.
  3. Select Change device (or Update) to continue.

  4. Toast will recommend a configured POS device to auto-fire. Select Update to continue or choose another device from the list if desired. Note: Choosing a device other than the recommended device may cause issues with online orders auto-firing. The recommend device is prompted based on the device that has the best wired connection for online orders to enter the system.
  5. Your selected device will appear next to Current Selection. Save and publish to finalize your changes.

Only one auto-firing device is recommended since having two devices causes issues because it can lead to multiple tickets being printed for the same order.

It is best practice to select a device that will be kept on when the restaurant is operational. The autofire device may be selected from Toast Web or on the device itself under Device Setup. When a new autofire device is selected, Toast Web will update with that information automatically.

You can view which device is selected as their autofire device from the Approval section on the Online Ordering page in Toast Web.

If you select a second auto-firing device, the following message will be given: You currently have 2 devices set to auto-fire instead of the single recommended device. This causes duplicate tickets to print.

If you choose another device, we will unassign all the other devices in the restaurant to be auto-fire devices.

Thresholds and Minimums for Auto-Firing

When Use rules is selected as the Approval Mode, thresholds and minimums can be set to determine if the order will be manually selected or automatically rejected.

The use of Approval Rules also requires order auto-firing to be configured on one Toast device.

  1. Navigate to Takeout & delivery > Availability > Online Ordering.
  2. Scroll down to the Approval section, and select Use rules for the Approval Mode setting. This setting uses preset rules to determine if the order should be sent directly to the kitchen and requires order approval through the Pending Orders Mode or they will be automatically rejected.
  3. Once Use rules is selected, the Approval Rules section will appear. Here you can select the checkbox for each rule you wish to enable:
    • Cash Threshold: Online cash orders over the specified trigger amount can be set to require manual approval or set to be automatically rejected.
    • Credit Minimum: Online credit orders under the specified trigger amount can be set to require manual approval or set to be automatically rejected.
    • Delivery Minimum: Used to automatically prevent any online delivery orders from being placed unless they reach a minimum total.
    • Total Amount: This can be used for orders whose post-tax total are at or above this specific amount.
  4. For each rule you enable, select your desired Enforcement behavior: Approval Needed or Reject.
  5. For each rule you enable, enter the Trigger Amount
  6. Save and publish your changes.
