Toast Go® 3 Card Reader Not Working

Question

How can I troubleshoot my Toast Go® 3 card reader if it's not working properly?

Answer

If the built-in card reader on your Toast Go® 3 isn't accepting tap, dip, or swipe payments, follow these troubleshooting steps.

  1. Restart your Toast Go® 3 by pressing and holding the power button until the power menu appears, then select Power Off. Once the device is back on, continue to the next step.
  2. Wake the card reader: tap the card icon on the passcode screen. The icon should turn blue, indicating the reader is ready. If it doesn't turn blue, continue below to check the card reader with the test app.

Note: If dip and tap payments aren't working but swipe payments are accepted, double-check that EMV is enabled on your device. Open the Toast app, navigate to Settings and tools > Device Setup, and locate EMV Enabled. If it's not already set to Yes, enable it and retry your payment.

Use the Card Reader Test App

  1. Swipe up from the bottom of the handheld screen and select the circle icon.
  2. Navigate to Settings and tools > View All and select the Card Reader Test App.
  3. On the following screen, select the corresponding button to test the dip (insert), swipe (magnetic stripe), and tap (NFC) functions of your card reader.
    • If you see Result: Fail, contact Toast Customer Care to determine whether the card reader needs to be replaced.
    • If you see Result: Pass, perform the following steps:
      1. Force-close the Card Reader Test App.
      2. Go to Settings and tools > Device Settings > Apps > Toast POS > Advanced > Open by default > Clear defaults.
      3. Turn off your device, then turn it back on.
      4. Open the Toast app.
      5. Log in using your Toast credentials.
      6. Retry the payment.
  4. If the payment still fails, contact Toast Customer Care.

Note: If you're located in Australia, Canada, Ireland, or the UK, your Toast Go® 3's card reader settings work differently. See Troubleshooting Steps for Toast Go® 3 Adyen Devices instead.
