Toast Payroll: Exempt vs. Nonexempt Employees

How do I know if my employee is eligible for overtime? Can I change that setting?

Non-exempt employees are eligible for overtime pay. Exempt employees are not. This setting will also help ensure that salaried employees do not count towards total hours for your Labor reports.

Whether an employee should be classified as exempt or non-exempt is based on a number of factors, including, for example, the employee's responsibilities, duties, and compensation. If you have questions regarding whether an employee should be classified as exempt or non-exempt, how exempt employees should be paid, whether exempt employees should clock in/out, etc., use your or consult with a lawyer.

To verify or make changes to an employee's exemption status: 

1. and navigate to an employee's profile via the Team page.
2. From the Employment tab, select the > icon next to an employee's primary job.
   
   
3. Select the yellow Edit button.
4. To verify the status, scroll down to Exempt/ Non Exempt.
   
   
5. If you'd like to change this setting, select a Reason at the top first. Administrative Update works well in this case.
6. Now you can scroll to the settings and update it accordingly. Select Submit to finalize.
