Manage Your Overtime Threshold in Toast Payroll

If you’re using both Toast Web and Toast Payroll or Toast Payroll only, do not configure your OT rules in Toast Web as these rules are handled automatically based on state regulations in Toast Payroll.

Weekly overtime thresholds are set internally, but you may check your daily overtime thresholds in Toast Payroll. They can be found on each employee's profile by navigating to Profile Settings from the Employment or Profile tab.

  • Follow State Regulations
    • This is the default option. Employees only have daily overtime if the state requires it. For example, an employee in California will automatically get overtime after eight hours in one day.
    • As of 10/19/26, California, Colorado, and Nevada are included in the Follow State Regulations setting. All other states will not have daily overtime applied when this setting is enabled.
      • In Nevada, daily overtime applies to employees who earn less than 1.5 times the Nevada minimum wage and is calculated on a 24-hour workday that starts at the employee's first clock in. Toast Payroll: Manage Overtime explains how Nevada daily overtime is calculated. If your business uses a different daily overtime policy, use the steps in that article to update the setting on employee's Toast Payroll profiles.
  • Alternative Workweek
    • This overrides the automatic daily overtime that applies to California and Colorado for those who don't want it in those states.
  • OT after 8/10/12 hours
    • This gives employees daily overtime after 8, 10, or 12 hours in a calendar day if that's your company policy. Nevada businesses may no longer need this setting to follow Nevada daily overtime rules since Follow State Regulations can now calculate them automatically.

Understand Common Overtime-Related Issues

There may be instances in which you may experience issues with overtime hours not appearing in Toast Payroll when they should be, and/or your timesheet may show that an employee has overtime hours when they should not have one. When these issues occur, we highly recommend that you check to see if your overtime rules are configured correctly. Remember that if you’re using both Toast Payroll and Toast Web, you must not configure your overtime rules in Toast Web since these rules are handled automatically based on state regulations in Toast Payroll.

If no mistakes are found in your overtime rules, contact Toast Payroll so we can check your work week start dates and your weekly overtime threshold. Chat with us by selecting the blue chat button in the lower-right corner of any Toast Payroll page.
