Understand Tip Calculation With Discounts

How are tips calculated in Toast when discounts are applied to a check?

For customers in the US, suggested tips are always calculated in Toast based on the pre-discount check total (never the post-discount check total). This cannot be changed at this time, but you are welcome to submit a feature request.

Tips are calculated in this manner to respect tipping etiquette for servers, to ensure that they are receiving a proper tip.

For customers in Australia, Canada, Ireland, and the U.K., suggested tips are calculated on the post-discount check total. This means all discounts, deposits, and pre-payments are subtracted before the tip amount is determined. If you require an adjustment to this calculation to be based upon the pre-discount total, please reach out to Toast Customer Care.
