Manage how your tipped employees declare cash tips during shift review. This article covers marking jobs as tipped, configuring and requiring cash tip declaration, setting minimum tip percentages, and editing declared cash tips on closed shifts.
What you will accomplish: Configure your restaurant to require cash tip declaration during shift review, set minimum tip thresholds, and edit declared cash tips when employees forget or enter incorrect amounts.
Required permissions: 3.12 Shift Review. You need manager or admin-level access to Toast Web for configuration tasks. POS editing requires manager permissions.
Required products and environment:
When to use this article:
Before employees can declare cash tips, you must mark the relevant jobs as tipped in Toast Web.
Expected outcome: The job now appears with the Tipped? box selected. Employees assigned to this job will be prompted to declare cash tips during shift review once cash tip declaration is enabled.
Enable the setting that requires tipped employees to declare cash tips when they close out their shifts.
Expected outcome: Tipped employees are now prompted to declare their cash tips during shift review. Employees in jobs not marked as tipped are not affected.
Set a minimum percentage to prevent employees from declaring $0.00 in cash tips. This percentage applies to cash sales tips only. Credit card and other non-cash tips are already reported automatically and are not included in this calculation.
Note: When a minimum tip percentage is configured, employees cannot declare $0.00 in cash tips if they have cash sales during their shift.
Expected outcome: During shift review, employees must declare at least the configured minimum percentage of their cash sales as cash tips.
Require employees to complete, collect and/or tip out steps during shift review before they can close their shift.
Expected outcome: Employees must complete the collect and/or tip out process during shift review. They cannot skip this step when closing their shift.
If an employee forgot to declare cash tips or entered an incorrect amount, you can edit the declared cash tips on a closed shift in Toast Web. You can only edit declared cash tips within the current business week.
Note: You cannot edit non-cash tips from this screen. To edit non-cash tips, you must reopen the employee's shift.
Expected outcome: The employee's declared cash tips are updated to the new amount. The change is reflected in payroll reporting.
Managers can also edit declared cash tips by reopening an employee's shift on the POS. This is useful when a manager is on the floor and needs to make a quick correction.
Note: Shifts created in Toast Web do not appear in Review Employee Shifts on the POS. If you created a shift in Toast Web, you must edit declared cash tips through Toast Web instead.
Expected outcome: The employee's declared cash tips are updated on the POS. The change syncs to Toast Web and is reflected in payroll reporting.
