Redeem a Toast Gift Card for Online Orders & Toast Local

Learn how a Toast gift card or e-gift card can be redeemed when ordering online and on Toast Local.

Important Gift Card Disclaimers

By default, only Toast gift card numbers can be used with Toast Online Ordering, because imported gift card numbers carry a higher risk of fraud. If you imported gift cards from a previous POS system, you have two options:

  • Guests can find their Toast gift card number on your Toast Gift Card Lookup Site and enter that number at checkout. To set up the Lookup Site for imported cards, see the Enable the Lookup Site for Imported Cards section of Check or Adjust a Gift Card Balance.
  • Guests can enter their imported gift card number directly at Toast Online Ordering checkout. This option is disabled by default. The restaurant owner must review and accept a written risk acknowledgment before it's enabled. To request it, contact Toast Customer Care.

Note: When you accept the risk acknowledgment, you accept all risk associated with misuse of imported gift card numbers redeemed on Toast Online Ordering. Toast can't verify that the person entering an imported gift card number is the card's owner.

This feature will only be available for customers with Toast Gift Cards enabled. Third-party integration gift cards are not supported at this time.


Guests who have purchased a physical Toast gift card or an eGift card can use it as payment for online purchases through Toast Online Ordering.

For this feature to work, Redeem on POS must be enabled on the Gift card setup page in Toast Web. Please contact Toast Customer Care to ensure that this feature is enabled.

Pay for Online Orders With a Toast Gift Card

  1. After selecting Checkout on the Toast Online Ordering page, your guest will be prompted to enter their personal information and choose a payment method.
  2. Below the payment details, there will be a Promos and Gift Cards section with a Gift Card field where the guest will enter their 16-digit code.
  3. Any additional cost on the check after the gift card is applied will be covered by the payment method that the guest entered.
  4. Guests can review their subtotal, taxes & fees, applied gift card value, and total payment at the bottom of the screen, and then select Place Order to complete payment. 

 

Guests can enter an imported gift card number at checkout only if direct redemption of imported gift cards is enabled for your location. If it isn't enabled, the gift card isn't applied and the guest sees an Error applying gift card message. The guest can use the Toast gift card number from your Toast Gift Card Lookup Site instead. When an imported gift card is applied, its balance is deducted right away, and another payment method can cover any remaining amount. If the order is voided or refunded, the amount returns to the imported gift card.


If the gift card no longer has value or is invalid, an error message will appear when it's applied to the order. Additionally, if a gift card is the only form of payment on the order then there will not be an option to tip. To add a tip to an online order, your guest will need to add their credit card information.

Pay for Toast Local With a Toast Gift Card

Note: Toast Local is not available outside of the US. 

 

  1. On the Checkout page in the Toast Local app, your guest will be prompted to choose a payment method. Add a Gift Card will be an option. 
  2. A new screen will appear prompting your guests to enter the gift card information. 
  3. After applying the value of the gift card to the order, another form of payment can be added to cover any additional cost on the check.

Note: Imported gift card numbers can't be redeemed as payment for Toast Local orders. Guests can find their Toast gift card number on your Toast Gift Card Lookup Site and use that number instead.
