Unsupported Menu Features for Online Ordering

It is important to note that Toast Online Ordering does not support all of the same menu features as Toast POS. The following items are not supported when using Toast Online Ordering:

Menus, Menu Group and Modifier Descriptions

Descriptions give you a chance to display more information at the menu, menu group, or item level for your guests when they are ordering online. To enable this feature:

1. Select Menus > Menu management > Menu manager.
2. Next, select the intended menu to open the settings panel.
3. Select Advanced settings to open the details page.
4. To add a menu description, scroll to the Properties section and enter your text into the Description field. The Properties section also offers the option to upload or update an image and change menu visibility.
5. To add a group or item description, continue to drill into the menu by selecting the group or item until you're on the appropriate level. Then use the Properties section as described previously.
6. Save and Publish your changes.  

Note:  For customers not in the Beta test, Menu, menu group, and modifier descriptions are not supported in Toast Online Ordering. The only description that will appear on your guest-facing Toast Online Ordering page will be item-level descriptions.

Images for Menus, Menu Groups, and Modifiers

Images for menus, menu groups, and modifiers are not supported in Toast Online Ordering. The only menu images that will appear on your guest-facing Toast Online Ordering page will be item-level images.

Pre-Modifiers

Pre-modifiers, or buttons that allow you add custom text either before or after a modifier option, are not supported in Toast Online Ordering. If you use pre-modifiers in your restaurant, we recommend creating item or group specific modifiers with modifier options that use each of the prefix and suffix combinations that are commonly used in-store.

Swap Pricing 

If you're using Pizza Menu Management, note that swap pricing, or the ability to update pricing as modifier options are added/removed/subbed, is not supported in Toast Online Ordering. The item will be charged correctly in the guest's cart, but guests will not be able to review the adjustments to the item's price in real time as modifier options are added/removed/subbed.

Menu Item Prep Times

Custom prep times entered for specific menu items do not factor into the quoted times shown to guests when they place an online order. If prep times, in seconds, are entered into the Preparation field on the menu item detail page, the quoted time for online orders will still be the quote time on the Takeout & Delivery page in the Toast back-end.

Open Discounts

Open discounts and some bulk discounts are not supported in Toast Online Ordering. For a full list of discounts that are supported, check out Supported Discounts for Online Ordering.

Open Prices

Items with an open pricing method, or items where a base price can be entered manually, are not supported for Toast Online Ordering. For more information on open-priced menu items, check out Creating an Open Item or Open Priced Menu Item.
