Toast Payroll: Manage Self-Written Paycheck Delivery

Last updated: Apr 8, 2026, 10:16 AM

If you'd like to avoid investing in check stock and printing and pay your staff by using a company checkbook or cash, take a look at self-printed paycheck delivery.

These methods only apply to employees who do not receive direct deposit or use Toast Pay Cards and would instead receive a paper check. If an employee signs up for direct deposit, they will receive their funds electronically regardless of which method is chosen.

Payroll Delivery Option Comparison

Toast offers three different options to pay employees who choose to receive a paper (live) check. You may choose self-written, self-printed, or Toast-printed. If an employee is signed up for direct deposit, they will receive their funds electronically regardless of which method is chosen.

Self-Written Paycheck Delivery Basics

Self-written paychecks allow the company to pay its staff without reliance on Toast for paycheck creation and/or delivery. Typically, this means you choose to pay employees with a check written out of your local checkbook, but other popular options are to pay with cash or a payment app. You may even pay some employees with one method (e.g., cash) and others with a second method (e.g., company checks).

This is often an attractive option if not many employees receive paper checks, you'd like to eliminate the cost and delivery associated with paper checks, and/or you do not wish to print checks on-site. When using self-written, Toast Payroll will still issue vendor checks such as garnishments.

Toast will deposit wages to employees who are signed up for direct deposit. The remaining employees will still need to be paid your own way (e.g. cash, company check, payment app, or through a combination of methods). Scroll down the page and select the Check Register report to review these employees and their net pay amounts.
