How do I set up weighed items for Toast Retail?

Answer

There are a few ways to set up items that will be weighed in Toast Retail. The first step for any of these items is to select Weight under the How is this item sold? drop-down on the item detail page. Then, you need to identify what type of scale will be used to select the proper configurations.
 
Scales not connected to the POS, no barcode printing

  • On the item details page, turn on Prompt for quantity.
  • Select the appropriate unit of measure (e.g. pounds or ounces).
  • Set the item’s price as the price per unit of measure (e.g. price per pound).
  • The weight will be manually entered in when ringing up the item on the POS.
     

Scales not connected to the POS, barcodes are printed

  • This setup uses embedded barcodes and is often a deli scale.
  • There are three kinds of embedded amount type barcodes: price, weight, and price-composed. Learn more in this Support Center article: Configure Embedded Barcodes.
    • Within the item details page, barcode scanner configuration should be set to the parent category or subcategory for scanned items.
    • The embedded amount type can be set either at the category level or on the individual item.
  • Set the item’s price as the price per unit of measure (e.g. price per pound).
     

Scales connected to the POS, no barcode printing

  • On the item details page, turn on Prompt for quantity.
  • Select the appropriate unit of measure (e.g. pounds or ounces).
  • Set the item’s price as the price per unit of measure (e.g. price per pound).
  • If applicable: Set the item’s tare weight on the item details page.
  • Toast Customer Care will enable a setting to validate units of measure. 
     

Note: At this time, deli scales cannot be connected to the POS. Only the weighed item setups described above are compatible with Toast.
