Configure Tare Weight

How do I add a tare weight to an item to account for the weight of its container?

To add an item's tare weight, follow these steps:

1. In Toast Web, navigate to Menus > Menu management > Menu manager.
2. Locate and select your menu item by using the Items button at the top of the page.
3. Scroll down to the Weighing section on the item details page.
4. For the Inherit Tare Weight from Menu Group? setting, select No, specify tare weight here.
5. Enter the tare weight of the container in the Tare Weight field.
   1. Note: The number of digits entered should match the number of digits your scale supports.
6. Save and publish your changes.

For items with embedded barcodes, if the item weight is embedded, this value will be subtracted from the weight of the item embedded into the barcode. If you need to set tare weight for multiple items, it can be completed via the Advanced Properties page (Menus > Menu management > Advanced properties).

If you use different-sized containers to sell the same item or allow guests to bring their own containers to buy products (zero waste store for example), leave the tare weight configured as zero and manually tare the container before ringing up the item on the POS terminal:

1. Place the empty container on the scale and press the tare button.
2. Fill the container with the desired item.
3. Add the item to the order in the POS terminal.
   
   

Note: Make sure the scale is positioned next to the POS terminal, and ensure that the tare button is easily accessible for staff when placing orders.
