Question

How do I use barcode scanning in Kiosk mode?

Answer

Barcode scanning in Kiosk mode has a few differences from scanning in Quick Order mode:

  • Kiosk mode doesn’t show the dialog for duplicate barcodes.
  • Kiosk mode requires items to be on a menu that is visible on kiosk.

For instructions on adding barcodes to items, see the Add a Barcode to an Item section of this Support Center article, Use Barcodes With Toast

Pay special attention to these configurations if you wish to use barcodes in Kiosk mode:

  • If some items should be scanned only in Quick Order mode, the menu must be visible on the POS and not visible to Kiosk.
  • If an item is available on multiple menus and visible to Kiosk, the menu group associated with that item (when scanned in Kiosk) will not be predictable.
  • If two items share the same barcode, the item chosen when scanned in Kiosk will not be predictable.
  • If an item needs to be scannable in both Kiosk and Quick Order mode, you need separate menus for each mode.
    • Mark the Quick Order menu group as the scanned parent to prevent the dialog from showing up when you scan the item in Quick Order mode.
    • Ensure that only the Kiosk menu is visible to Kiosk.
  • Until Toast app version 2.67, items with embedded barcodes must be on a menu group marked as a scanned parent or they will not scan. In this case, if an item with an embedded barcode must be scannable in both Kiosk and Quick Order mode, you must mark both menu groups containing the item as scanned parents. There is no way to avoid the dialog on Quick Order mode in this case. If you need to update your device, you can check out this Support Center article: Update Your Toast App.

If your barcode scanner stops working in Kiosk mode, try rebooting your device to see if the issue is resolved.
