Toast Label Printer Isn't Printing

Take the following steps to troubleshoot:

Start by confirming that your printer is properly powered on and set up following the steps listed in the Toast Item Label Printer Quick Start Guide. Next, print a test ticket.

Step 1: Confirm your printer is able to print a ticket.
  1. Power off your printer.
  2. Hold the Feed button on the top of your printer.
  3. While continuing to hold the Feed button, power the printer back on.

Note: If your printer is unable to produce a test ticket, contact our Customer Support team and reference code #550.

Step 2: Confirm your networking information (this information can be utilized when calling our Customer Care team for additional troubleshooting assistance).
  1. Your test ticket will print with different submenu action items.
  2. To select Print Self Test press the feed button two times, then press the feed button a third time while holding down on the button.
  3. This will produce a long slip that includes data on the firmware version and printer serial number.
  4. The print will pause with text on the final slip reading "Interface is Configuring." Wait approximately one minute for the remainder of the ticket to print.
  5. This final slip will print and include connectivity information, including your IP address, DHCP status, and MAC address.
  6. Press and release the feed button to finish your self-test and return to normal operation.

Step 3: Decipher if you're having a networking or configuration issue.

Is DHCP Enabled or Disabled?

DHCP Enabled

DHCP Disabled

If your test receipt shows that DHCP is Enabled, your printer is set up for a dynamic IP address. All printers shipped from Toast since June 2021 are DHCP enabled.

On the Printer and Cash Drawer Configuration page in Toast Web, confirm the serial number field is populated (with the serial number of the device) and the IP address field is empty.

Example:

Serial number field is populated, IP address field is blank

If you see both fields filled, delete the IP address. Don't forget to save and publish your changes.

If your test receipt shows that DHCP is Disabled your printer is set up for a static IP address.

On the Printer and Cash Drawer Configuration page in Toast Web, confirm the serial number field is empty and the IP address field is populated (with the IP address listed on your test ticket).

Example:

Serial number field is blank, IP address field is populated

If you see both fields filled, delete the serial number. Don't forget to save and publish your changes.

Need to change your printer's static IP address? Visit Change Your TP200 Toast Printer's Static IP Address.

Is there an IP address (with multiple numbers) on the test print?

On the test ticket that just printed using the instructions above, check to confirm there is an IP address on the ticket. If the IP address is showing as "0.0.0.0" that means your printer isn't connected to the network. If there is an IP address on the test print, it means that it's a configuration issue. Follow the steps below to solve for either issue:

Network Issue
(IP address on test print shows a series of "0s")

Configuration Issue
(IP address was printed on the test print and has a series of numbers)

  1. On the device connected to your printer, open the Toast app and navigate to Setup > Printer Setup.
  2. Check to confirm that the printer shows up on the My Printers list. Most likely, the printer will show up as Offline
  3. Regardless, select the printer you're troubleshooting and select Print test ticket. This will ping the printer from the device and reset the network connection.
  4. A ticket should print from the printer. It will either print as a receipt (if Print test receipt was selected) or ticket (if Print test ticket was selected). If it does and now the IP address no longer shows as "0.0.0.0", follow the steps on the column to the right to confirm the configuration of your printer. If nothing prints or the IP address continues to show as "0.0.0.0", then continue to step 5.
  5. Next, make sure that the printer and terminals or handhelds are on the same network. Learn more about how to check and/or forget a non-Toast secured network on your terminal in Forget a Network on a Toast Device. Sometimes your devices might be connected to your internal network which will cause the printer to not be able to connect to the Toast secure network.
  6. Attempt to print a test ticket again from the terminal. If nothing prints, reseat the Ethernet switch on the printer. To do so, reset (disconnect and reconnect) the Ethernet cable that goes into the printer on both ends and power cycle the printer by turning it off for 2 minutes and turning it back on.
  7. Once that's done, check to confirm that there is a green light flashing on the printer Ethernet port. If not, go ahead reset your router to refresh your network. Unplug the power cord and wait two minutes and reconnect.

  8. Attempt to print a test ticket from the device once again. If the IP address hasn't changed and if you are still unable to print anything from the printer, please contact Toast Customer Care and reference code #551.
  1. If the printer is used as a prep station, on the prep stations page in Toast Web, make sure the printer is assigned to a prep station.
  2. If your restaurant uses non-printing prep stations, such as for a bar terminal, tickets will not print as a result. Check to confirm that's the case. Navigate to Device Setup on the terminal. If you'd like to use this printer for a prep station, but would like the tickets to print, select none for Non-Printing Prep Stations
  3. If your restaurant uses Item Routing, make sure that the items from that dining option or service area are getting routed to the correct prep station that is associated with the printer in question.
  4. Make sure you don't have more than one auto-fire device at your restaurant. To check, navigate to Device Setup on the device(s) and confirm you only have one device that has Order Auto-Firing set to Yes
  5. At any point during these steps, it's recommended that you attempt to print a test ticket from your printer once again and make sure it's printing correctly.
  6. If your printer is still not printing tickets appropriately, please contact Toast Customer Care for additional troubleshooting.

Toast Label Printer Shaking While Printer

If your label printer is shaking, please check that the label paper is fed fully through (the printer makes a shaking/grinding sound if the feeder is trying to grab the paper but can't get it).

Also, check that the width adjuster inside the printer is properly set. Toast recommends the width be set to 80mm based on our paper recommendation. However, if you are using different paper, the width could vary. To adjust this use the dial inside of the printer.

Clean Your Toast Label Printer

Note: Before starting routine maintenance, ensure that the printer power is turned off and you have read the Auto-Cutter Failure Disclaimer. Do not use solvents like gasoline or acetone for the following cleaning procedures. When cleaning sensors, the printer should not be powered on until the pure alcohol has completely evaporated.

It is recommended that the maintenance cycle should be no longer than one month.
