Last updated: Apr 8, 2026, 10:02 AM

When employees do not utilize direct deposit or a Toast Pay Card, they will receive a paper check. Learn more about Toast-printed paper checks.
These methods only apply to employees who do not receive direct deposit or use Toast Pay Cards and would instead receive a paper check. If an employee signs up for direct deposit, they will receive their funds electronically regardless of which method is chosen.

Paycheck Delivery Option Comparison

Toast offers three different options to pay employees who choose to receive a paper (live) check. You may choose Toast-printed, self-written, or self-printed. If an employee is signed up for direct deposit, they will receive their funds electronically regardless of which method is chosen.

Toast-Printed Check Delivery

Navigate to Settings > Payroll > Paycheck Delivery tab. The Paycheck Delivery tab allows you to choose how you'd like to receive and/or distribute wages to employees who do not wish to receive wages from direct deposit or a Toast Pay Card. Learn about the different payment methods employees can choose from in this article.

If you select Toast-Printed check printing and shipping, all employees not receiving direct deposit or PayOuts via the Toast Pay Card will be sent a paper check (also known as a live check) printed and shipped after each payroll they have a positive net pay on. These paper checks also have paystubs attached to them.

Live checks can not be sent out to an employee's address; only to business addresses. If the package is delivered through UPS, an email with the tracking number will be sent. You may also find the tracking number after 7 pm CST on the Review and Submit step of a submitted payroll. To return to this step, navigate to Payroll > Past Payrolls > View for the appropriate payroll.

In cases where UPS is experiencing delays outside of Toast's control (holidays, bad weather, increased volume, etc.) and your restaurant's paychecks won't be shipped on or before the check date, you have other options to pay your employees on time. See Toast Payroll: Paycheck Package Delivery Delays for the instructions.

  • Alphabetical: default (unless otherwise indicated)
  • Department: specific to your organizational structure
  • Location: specific to locations within the organization

Paystub Printing: Pay stubs will be sent with the live checks, but we can also send out direct deposit slips. These slips contain employee net amounts and are shipped to the appropriate locations/parties along with the paper check packages.

Vendor Shipping: Toast Payroll has the ability to print vendor checks that are sent to an agency (the vendor) for items like a garnishment.

  • Checks in Payroll Package: vendor checks will be included as part of the payroll package
  • Vendor Checks via UPS: vendor checks are sent separately via UPS
  • Vendor Checks Sent Directly to Vendor: this happens when a deduction is tied to a vendor in Toast Payroll and these will be sent in the mail or direct deposited to the vendor.
