Toast Payroll: Register for State Tax Accounts

Last updated: Apr 8, 2026, 10:17 AM

Provides direct links to each state's website as well as information on your state's local taxes.

In this Article:

State Tax Account Registration Overview

  • Reference the first chart below for steps and requirements to register for your state tax account number(s).
  • Use the second chart for state unemployment (SUTA) rate information and when to expect your state tax account number(s).
  • In Toast Payroll, navigate to Taxes to see the state tax-related tasks and information we still need from you to assist with quarterly tax filings.
  • Beginning in May 2025, there will be additional visibility into local taxes on your Tax Accounts page. Update any fields as necessary.
  • When you receive a paper mail or email tax notice about changes or updates to your state or local tax account number, effective date, unemployment tax rate, or payment frequency, navigate to Settings > Payroll > Tax Accounts and enter the information ASAP. Visit Toast Payroll: Get Help With Tax Accounts for more details.

If your state's name is hyperlinked in the State column, select the link for details relating to that state's tax management. Toast Payroll is working to add more of these state-specific articles. Additionally, if you see a (Local) link next to your state's name, you may be subject to local taxes as well. Confirm with a local tax authority or CPA if you have questions about what state or local taxes you are subject to.
